Excavations from graves at Mohenjo-daro, an Indus Valley civilization settlement, unearthed terracotta dice dating to 2500–1900 BCE, including at least one die whose opposite sides all add up to seven, as in modern dice. Bone dice from Skara Brae, Scotland have been dated to 3100–2400 BCE. Perhaps the oldest known dice were excavated as part of a backgammon-like game set at the Burnt City, an archeological site in south-eastern Iran, estimated to be from between 28 BCE. The Egyptian game of senet (played before 3000 BCE and up to the 2nd century CE) was played with flat two-sided throwsticks which indicated the number of squares a player could move, and thus functioned as a form of dice. It is theorized that dice developed from the practice of fortune-telling with the talus of hoofed animals, colloquially known as knucklebones.

The BLE capability introduces some exciting possibilities for connected game play in-person and over long distances, and it looks like has some cool applications already in the works. The project has some neat tips for building interaction into case design with the use of the display and a flexible bezel as integrated buttons. We even see a graph of the completed board’s power draw from the button wake up, display refresh, and low power sleep. Even if you aren’t building this project, the video after the break includes a nice intro to electronic ink and low power microcontrollers for the uninitiated. Well played!įor this project, realized it needed to be battery powered and just choosing the right display for a battery powered application can be daunting. While they have grand plans for a BLE networked future application, we admire the restraint to complete a V1 project before allowing scope-creep to run amok.
